Can You Trim Trees Near Power Lines Yourself?

[TL;DR: Trimming trees near power lines is highly dangerous and should never be a diy project. Florida tree trimming regulations and FPL guidelines require a certified arborist for this work. Attempting to prune trees close to power lines yourself risks electric shock, power outages, and massive financial liability.]

The Hidden Dangers Above Your South Florida Yard

You want your property to look great and stay safe. But an overgrown tree branch near an electrical line creates a serious problem. You might wonder if you can just grab a ladder and trim trees around the lines yourself.

The simple answer is absolutely not. Removing trees near power lines is incredibly risky. Line safety is critical for your home.

Why DIY Tree Trimming Near Power Lines Is a Bad Idea

A homeowner often feels frustrated when trees and power lines cross paths. It looks bad and threatens your home. However, the diy tree trimming dangers are too high.

Touching a power line or a branch touching one can cause instant electrocution. You can also cause power outages for your entire neighborhood. If a tree is dangerous, it requires professional tree care.

Understanding Florida Tree Trimming Regulations

South Florida has strict rules about who can safely work near utility lines. These rules protect you and the local grid. The law requires that only specially trained professionals work within 10 feet of overhead power lines.

Regular landscapers do not have this line clearance training. You must never attempt to prune trees within the minimum approach distance yourself. Never prune trees within 10 feet of a line.

Who Is Responsible For Trimming The Trees?

Figuring out who is responsible for trimming can be confusing. The utility company maintains the main distribution lines that run from pole to pole. They will clear branches near power lines that threaten these main conductors.

However, you must handle the service line leading to your house. This service wire connects the pole to your home. You must hire a line-clearance arborist to reduce the risk.

What Our Arborists See In The Field

At Discount Tree Service, we see the dangerous aftermath of amateur tree cutting. Branches conduct electricity very easily in our humid climate. You do not even have to make contact with power lines to get shocked.

Electricity can arc from the energized lines to your long-handled tools. We work with the utility to de-energize lines when necessary. We use specialized equipment to prevent a fire hazard.

A fallen limb can electrify the ground near the tree. Even a 120-volt line can energize the area and be deadly. We always maintain minimum safety clearance.

Keep Your Feet On The Ground

Trimming trees near power lines is never worth the risk. Your safety is much more important than saving money on tree work near high-voltage lines. Let the trained experts handle the hazard.

This ensures your trees stay healthy and you avoid a costly outage. Always keep trees planted a safe distance away from power lines. You must plan for their mature height.

Quick Answers

What happens if a tree or branch touches a live wire?
The branch can catch fire or conduct electricity to the ground. This creates a deadly hazard for anyone touching the tree.

Will the utility trim trees in my yard for free?
FPL only trims trees that interfere with their main utility line. You must hire a private tree service for the line connecting to your home.

Can any tree service work near power lines?
No. The company must have a specific line-clearance certification. This allows them to safely perform tree work within 10 feet of high voltage lines.

How close can a tree be to an electrical line?
You should plant new trees at least 20 to 30 feet away from electrical wires. This ensures you maintain proper clearance distances.

I just had a very pleasant experience with this company. He told me he would be at my house between 730 and 8 AM and he was there exactly when he said he would. He gave me a very fair price that included cutting down several royal palms and then grinding the stumps down to below grade.. While he was in the process, I asked him for quotes on other trees in my yard and he gave me very fair prices on those as well. The job was done within a couple of hours and they hauled everything away. He ended up removing several more royal palms and grinding those down along with other stumps I had in my yard. It was impressive to see these guys work and they did a phenomenal job. I would recommend them to anyone.

Recently I bought a condo with a tree growing out of the patio and encroaching into the fence. The association cut the tree but not the stump. With all the new expenses of moving and such, I had to find a reasonably priced stump removal. After calling several companies, Discount Tree Service provided the lowest price. The stump removal expert was courteous, thorough and efficient. As an extra bonus he removed the grindings. Because he took the extra step, I am writing this review. Discount Tree Service is a great company with employees who care!

Discount Tree Service did a great job trimming my 5 Royal Palms and 1 Coconut Palm. The thing I appreciated the most was how responsive they were. Also, Orlando was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. I had been calling other tree service companies for weeks trying to get someone to trim my trees. Most companies didn't even reply to my emails or phone calls. Two companies said they would give me an estimate, but never showed up. Then I called Discount Tree Service. I spoke to a real person who sent someone out 30 minutes later. I got a reasonable estimate, and they returned the next day to trim my trees. I was thrilled!

I had some dangerous coconuts about 30 feet over my head. I called them saying I needed someone to come out quickly. They were out within 2 hours, did a great job, and we're very reasonably priced. Very delightful gentlemen to work with. They are my go to guys from now on. I couldn't get my previous tree service on the phone.
