Hurricane Tree Prep Checklist for Broward Homeowners (Before Peak Season)

Preparing your trees for peak hurricane season protects your home from severe weather damage. This preparation checklist covers what to inspect and which branches to thin before a hurricane hits. It also explains when to call a certified arborist. Follow these steps to secure your Broward County property and reduce your risk of tree-related emergencies.

Securing Your Property Before Hurricane Season Peaks

August and September bring the highest risk of severe weather to South Florida. High winds can easily turn an overgrown limb into a dangerous projectile. You want to keep your family and your home safe during a storm.

Waiting until a hurricane warning is issued leaves you with few options. A reputable tree service will fill its schedule instantly when a forecast shows a storm approaching. Taking action in early summer gives you time to properly handle hurricane tree preparation in Florida.

The Hidden Risks in the Trees on Your Property

Florida homeowners often assume their trees are healthy enough to withstand strong winds. However, dense canopies and hidden structural weaknesses create major vulnerabilities. A tree that looks perfectly fine might have root issues or internal decay hidden inside the trunk.

When hurricane-force winds hit Broward County, these weak points fail. Broken branches can damage your roof, shatter windows, or take down power lines and cause an outage. This causes expensive repairs and creates serious safety hazards for your family. You need a clear plan to identify and fix these risks before the wind picks up.

Your Hurricane Tree Prep Steps

Use this step-by-step guide for storm prep in Broward. A professional inspection early in the year helps you spot a defect while you still have time to fix it.

Step 1: Inspect the Trunk and Root Plate

Walk around your property and look closely at every large tree. Search for vertical cracks in the trunk or peeling bark. Look for dead limbs, brown leaves, or hanging deadwood caught in the branches. Check the root plate for signs of root rot or shallow root systems that could uproot easily. These are the first things to fail during a hurricane.

Step 2: Evaluate the Canopy Density

Wind needs to pass freely through the branches of your trees. A canopy that is too thick acts like a sail and catches the wind. This puts massive pressure on the stem and roots. If you cannot see sunlight through the branches, the tree needs professional structural pruning. You can read more about this process in our canopy thinning guide.

Step 3: Check for Weaknesses

Healthy roots and strong branches anchor the tree firmly. Look for included bark where a lateral branch meets the main trunk. This creates a weak union and a major failure point. A tree with a rotting root system or severe decay is highly likely to fall over in a storm.

Step 4: Clear the Warning Zones

Identify any limb hanging over your roof, driveway, or power lines. These branches pose the highest immediate hazard to your property. You must prune or cable these specific risks well before a storm arrives.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

You can easily handle ground-level cleanup yourself. Pick up a fallen pine cone, clear away a pile of loose debris, and secure your lawn furniture. This basic preparedness prevents small items from becoming dangerous debris.

However, you should never attempt to prune large branches or remove trees yourself. Operating a chainsaw on a ladder is extremely dangerous. Professionals have the right safety gear and bucket trucks to handle weak branches. If a tree requires a ladder to trim, you need to hire a tree service crew.

Professional Insights from the Field

Over the last 25 years, our ISA-certified arborist team has responded to hundreds of storm damage calls. We consistently see the same patterns after a major hurricane. Trees that receive regular maintenance rarely cause catastrophic property damage.

The most severe damage usually comes from neglect when neglected trees have heavy, unbalanced tops. We also see major issues with trees planted too close to houses. High failure rates happen when heavy rains saturate the soil around a large live oak or pine. Identifying and removing these hazardous trees early is the best way to protect your home. Proactive tree pruning is always cheaper and safer than emergency removal after a storm.

Protect Your Home with Proactive Pre-Season Care

Your trees should add beauty to your property, not create a constant source of anxiety. Following a hurricane prep plan puts you in control of your property’s safety. You can find more comprehensive advice in our complete South Florida tree care guide.

Common Questions About Hurricane Prep

How much does it cost to prep trees for a hurricane?
Costs vary based on the size and number of trees. Basic structural pruning usually starts around a few hundred dollars. We provide free, transparent estimates so you know the exact price upfront.

When is the best time to prune trees for hurricane season?
You should schedule an inspection between early spring and June 1. Waiting until August or September peak season means competing with emergency surges.

Will topping my tree make it safer in a storm?
No. Topping a tree ruins its structure and creates weak new growth that will overgrow and tangle. Proper canopy thinning is the only safe way to reduce wind resistance.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house?
Follow your evacuation plan and ensure everyone is safe. Then, contact our emergency tree services team for immediate removal and to block off dangerous areas. Do not attempt post-hurricane cleanup yourself.

I just had a very pleasant experience with this company. He told me he would be at my house between 730 and 8 AM and he was there exactly when he said he would. He gave me a very fair price that included cutting down several royal palms and then grinding the stumps down to below grade.. While he was in the process, I asked him for quotes on other trees in my yard and he gave me very fair prices on those as well. The job was done within a couple of hours and they hauled everything away. He ended up removing several more royal palms and grinding those down along with other stumps I had in my yard. It was impressive to see these guys work and they did a phenomenal job. I would recommend them to anyone.

Recently I bought a condo with a tree growing out of the patio and encroaching into the fence. The association cut the tree but not the stump. With all the new expenses of moving and such, I had to find a reasonably priced stump removal. After calling several companies, Discount Tree Service provided the lowest price. The stump removal expert was courteous, thorough and efficient. As an extra bonus he removed the grindings. Because he took the extra step, I am writing this review. Discount Tree Service is a great company with employees who care!

Discount Tree Service did a great job trimming my 5 Royal Palms and 1 Coconut Palm. The thing I appreciated the most was how responsive they were. Also, Orlando was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. I had been calling other tree service companies for weeks trying to get someone to trim my trees. Most companies didn't even reply to my emails or phone calls. Two companies said they would give me an estimate, but never showed up. Then I called Discount Tree Service. I spoke to a real person who sent someone out 30 minutes later. I got a reasonable estimate, and they returned the next day to trim my trees. I was thrilled!

I had some dangerous coconuts about 30 feet over my head. I called them saying I needed someone to come out quickly. They were out within 2 hours, did a great job, and we're very reasonably priced. Very delightful gentlemen to work with. They are my go to guys from now on. I couldn't get my previous tree service on the phone.
