The Broward County Hurricane Season Tree Survival Guide

Protecting your property during hurricane season requires proactive tree care. You can reduce potential hazards by identifying weak species and performing proper pruning. This guide covers pre-storm preparation, storm recovery, and insurance documentation to keep your landscape safe.

Preparing Your South Florida Property for Storm Season

Living in South Florida means enjoying beautiful tropical weather. It also means facing the annual threat of a tropical storm or hurricane. High winds can turn your beautiful landscape into a serious hazard.

Every homeowner works hard to maintain their property. The thought of a massive tree crashing through your roof is terrifying. This fear is a reality for many unprepared residents each year.

You do not have to wait and hope for the best. You can take control of your property’s safety right now. Proper tree care is your best defense against severe damage to trees.

The Hidden Risks in Your Own Backyard

Many people ignore maintenance until a storm is imminent. This delay creates a dangerous situation for trees and property. Weak branches and unstable roots cannot withstand strong winds.

When heavy winds hit, an overgrown tree becomes a dangerous projectile. A flying branch can shatter windows and destroy vehicles. A completely uprooted trunk can cause catastrophic structural damage to your home.

The problem gets worse when you consider the financial impact. Emergency repairs and insurance deductibles cost thousands of dollars. Proactive tree care services are much cheaper than paying for major storm damage.

Identifying High-Risk Tree Species in Broward County

Not all tree species handle high winds the same way. Some are naturally more prone to breaking or uprooting. Knowing what grows in your yard is a top priority.

The Danger of Ficus Trees

Ficus trees are very common in local neighborhoods. They grow quickly and provide excellent privacy hedges. However, they have shallow root systems that fail easily in wet soil.

During a hurricane, heavy water saturates the ground. Strong winds can then easily topple a large ficus tree. You can learn more about managing these specific risks in our ficus tree guide.

Declining Palms and Frond Hazards

Palm trees are iconic in Broward County, FL. Healthy native palms usually survive a tropical storm very well. Dead or declining palms pose a severe risk.

A heavy palm frond can snap off and fly through the air. These fronds can easily break windows or damage roof tiles. Regular inspections help catch these hazards before storm season begins.

Pre-Season Tree Preparation and Maintenance

The best time to prepare for a hurricane is during the spring. Waiting until a storm warning is issued is too late. You must schedule tree care professional help early.

The Importance of Canopy Thinning

Canopy thinning removes select branches from a tree. This allows wind to blow through the canopy rather than pushing against it. It acts like opening a window to let a breeze pass.

Thick, dense trees act like a sail in high winds. The wind catches the leaves and puts massive stress on the trunk. Read our canopy thinning guide to see how this improves wind resistance.

Structural Pruning and Tree Staking

Proper pruning gives young trees the support they need. You may need to cable or anchor the tree to keep it upright. Proper tree staking helps them survive harsh weather.

Older trees benefit greatly from structural pruning. You must prune weak, crossing, or dead limbs that could break. A strong central trunk is vital for storm survival.

Identifying Hazardous Trees Before They Fall

Some trees look healthy but have hidden decay or disease. These hazardous trees are the first to fall during a hurricane. An ISA-certified arborist can spot these hidden dangers.

If a tree is too sick to save, you must remove it. Taking down a damaged tree prevents future disasters. Learn more in our comprehensive Broward tree removal guide.

Smart Planting for a Hurricane-Ready Yard

Creating a hurricane-ready landscape starts with smart planting. When you choose a tree, consider its mature height and width. Do not plant large tree species directly under utility lines.

Before you dig, make sure the soil drains well. Add proper mulch to protect the roots and retain healthy moisture. Good planting choices minimize future potential damage.

Safety Measures During a Hurricane

When the storm finally hits, your only priority is safety. Stay indoors and stay away from windows. Never go outside to check on your trees during high winds.

Do not attempt to move a fallen branch while the storm is active. Wind gusts can be unpredictable and deadly. Wait until local authorities update the public and declare the area safe.

Post-Storm Assessment and Recovery

The storm has passed, and it is time to assess your property. Walk around your yard carefully and look for downed utility lines. If you see wires in your trees, call the utility company immediately.

How to Safely Inspect Your Trees

Look for a hanging limb that is broken but still attached. These are called widow-makers because they can fall without warning. Do not stand directly under a severely damaged tree.

Check the ground around the base of your large trees. If the soil is lifted or cracked, the roots are failing. The tree might fall over even though the wind has stopped.

Documenting Damage for Insurance

Take clear photos and videos of all tree debris immediately. Do this before you start moving any tree debris off the road. Insurance companies need proof of the damage to process your claim.

Write down the time and date you took the photos. Keep all receipts for any emergency repair work you pay for. Our insurance documentation guide explains exactly what adjusters look for.

When to Call for Emergency Tree Services

If a tree has fallen on your house, you need immediate help. Do not try to remove a large tree from your roof yourself. This requires heavy equipment and professional experience.

Discount Tree Service offers 24/7 emergency tree services for these exact situations. We can safely remove the tree and tarp your roof. We also handle complete storm cleanup to restore your property.

DIY Tree Care vs. Hiring a Professional

Many homeowners want to save money by doing their own tree trimming. This is fine for a small branch you can reach from the ground. You can safely use hand clippers for minor trimming.

If you let a tree overgrow, it becomes a dangerous projectile. You should never use a chainsaw on a ladder. Do not attempt to prune branches near power lines.

Hiring a certified arborist is always cheaper than a hospital visit. We have the training, safety gear, and insurance required. We know exactly how much to cut without harming the tree.

Improper cutting can actually weaken a tree and make it more dangerous. Leave the heavy removal and canopy work to the experts.

Understanding Tree Preparation Costs

Homeowners often ask how much hurricane preparation costs. The price depends heavily on the diameter and type of your trees. A small palm tree costs much less to prune than a massive oak.

Accessibility also plays a big role in the final price. Trees located near fences or utility lines require more time and care. The number of trees on your property will also affect the total.

Emergency removal after a storm is always more expensive than preventative maintenance. Investing in preparation now saves you money in the long run. We provide clear, upfront pricing before any work begins.

Common Hurricane Tree Questions

When should I start preparing my trees for hurricane season?
You should start preparing your trees in April or May. Hurricane season begins in June, and tree service schedules fill up fast. Early preparation ensures your trees have time to heal from pruning.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree?
Yes, you often need a permit to remove a tree. Regulations vary between Broward County and neighboring Miami-Dade. Always consult your local city government before you remove a large tree.

How much does hurricane tree preparation cost in Broward County?
Costs vary based on tree size, location, and the required work. Basic palm trimming might cost a few hundred dollars. Large canopy thinning or hazardous tree removal can cost over a thousand dollars.

Are palm trees safe during a hurricane?
Healthy native palms are highly wind-resistant and usually survive storms well. However, dead fronds and heavy seed pods can become dangerous flying debris. Regular trimming is still necessary for safety.

Should I cut off all the branches before a storm?
No, you should never prune off all the branches. This harmful practice is called hat-racking and it destroys the tree. It creates weak new growth that breaks easily in the next storm.

Will my homeowner’s insurance cover tree removal?
Insurance usually covers removal if the tree falls on a covered structure. They rarely pay to remove a tree that falls on empty grass. Check your specific policy details before a storm hits.

What is the most dangerous tree during a hurricane?
Shallow-rooted trees planted in wet soil are the most dangerous. Ficus trees and large pines often uproot during severe hurricanes. Dead or diseased trees of any species are also extreme hazards.

Can I trim my own trees before a storm?
You can safely prune small branches you can reach from the ground. Leave large branches, ladder work, and chainsaw work to the professionals. DIY tree work causes many severe injuries every year.

What should I do if a tree falls on my roof?
Evacuate the house immediately if the structure is compromised. Call a professional emergency tree service to safely remove the weight. Take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

How do I know if a tree is dead or dying?
Look for missing bark, large dead branches, or fungal decay on the trunk. A tree that does not grow leaves in the spring is likely dead. An arborist can perform a health assessment to be sure.

Who is responsible if my tree falls on a neighbor’s property?
Generally, if a healthy tree falls due to an act of God, the neighbor’s insurance pays. If the tree was dead and you ignored it, you might be liable. Always remove known hazardous trees to avoid legal issues.

I just had a very pleasant experience with this company. He told me he would be at my house between 730 and 8 AM and he was there exactly when he said he would. He gave me a very fair price that included cutting down several royal palms and then grinding the stumps down to below grade.. While he was in the process, I asked him for quotes on other trees in my yard and he gave me very fair prices on those as well. The job was done within a couple of hours and they hauled everything away. He ended up removing several more royal palms and grinding those down along with other stumps I had in my yard. It was impressive to see these guys work and they did a phenomenal job. I would recommend them to anyone.

Recently I bought a condo with a tree growing out of the patio and encroaching into the fence. The association cut the tree but not the stump. With all the new expenses of moving and such, I had to find a reasonably priced stump removal. After calling several companies, Discount Tree Service provided the lowest price. The stump removal expert was courteous, thorough and efficient. As an extra bonus he removed the grindings. Because he took the extra step, I am writing this review. Discount Tree Service is a great company with employees who care!

Discount Tree Service did a great job trimming my 5 Royal Palms and 1 Coconut Palm. The thing I appreciated the most was how responsive they were. Also, Orlando was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. I had been calling other tree service companies for weeks trying to get someone to trim my trees. Most companies didn't even reply to my emails or phone calls. Two companies said they would give me an estimate, but never showed up. Then I called Discount Tree Service. I spoke to a real person who sent someone out 30 minutes later. I got a reasonable estimate, and they returned the next day to trim my trees. I was thrilled!

I had some dangerous coconuts about 30 feet over my head. I called them saying I needed someone to come out quickly. They were out within 2 hours, did a great job, and we're very reasonably priced. Very delightful gentlemen to work with. They are my go to guys from now on. I couldn't get my previous tree service on the phone.
